미국 연방 정부에서 거의 모든 국민들을 대상으로 운영하는 연금 보험을 말한다. 노령, 장애, 유족 연금이 포함되어 있다. 우리 월급에서 국민연금 보험료가 공제되듯이 미국에선 Social Security tax가 공제된다. 고유 명사라 각 단어 첫자가 대문자인 것 기억해 두자.

참고로 미국에선 주민등록번호를 Social Security number라고 한다. 원래 이 제도 때문에 만든 개인 고유 번호인데 지금은 사실상의 국민 ID 번호로 사용된다고 한다. 줄여서 SSN으로 쓰기도 한다.

아래는 ABC 뉴스쇼 Good Morning America의 보도. 미국 정부가 실수로 초과 지급한 사회 연금 규모가 우리나라 돈으로 조 단위라고. 더 큰 문제는 초과 지급 받은 사람들은 잘못이 없음에도 정부가 그 돈을 토해내라고 하고 있다는 것.
