직역하면 ‘개 호각’인데 이게 뭐냐면 개를 훈련 시킬 때 쓰는 특수 호각으로 사람은 못 듣지만 개는 들을 수 있는 초고음을 낸다고 한다.

여기서 의미가 확장되어서 ‘특정 집단만 이해할 수 있는 메시지’라는 뜻이 나왔다.
