뭔가를 상대보다 먼저 한다는 뜻의 숙어다.

내가 먼저 했을 때도 쓰고 (We beat them to the punch.) 남이 먼저 했을 때도 쓴다. (They beat us to the punch.)

직역하면 상대보다 먼저 때린다는 말이니까 확장된 의미를 유추하기 어렵지 않을 거다.
