presumption이 “추정”이고 innocence가 “무죄/결백”이다. 즉, 피고인이 유죄 판결을 받기 전까지는 무죄로 간주한다는 의미인 무죄 추정 원칙을 말한다. 또한 범죄 입증의 책임이 검찰에 있다는 뜻을 내포한다.

풀어서 innocent until proven guilty라고 표현하기도 한다.
